MG MG Farina Magnette - Have you seen this?

Hey folks, check this out!

I was pretty excited until I saw that "cracked block" part. Tell me where I could find a reasonably-priced replacement for that RR cracked block, and I'll bid on the car.

And here's another one. It's over now but at $5100 the reserve wasn't met. Perhaps we'll see it relisted.

And it is relisted. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230067830470&fromMakeTrack=true

I asked the seller about the valve or lifter "tick" and he got pretty defensive. The last time I heard a valve or lifter tick that couldn't be fixed with a valve adustment, it turned out to be a bad cam lobe and an expensive repair - and that was on a B series 1800 - hardly a Rolls Royce. His refusal to have it checked is tantamount to admitting there might be an expensive problem. If it was minor, I would think he'd check it if he wants to sell the car!

I love the looks and apparent condition of this car (although that grill has got to go), but no way will I touch it in his price range. The winning bidder will have to know either a lot more, or even less, than I know. I hope it's not a serious problem.

FWIW,

Well sh!t Allen, wouldn't you know I drive through Nashua NH every day... and thats where this car is located. I think I'll take a look!

Thanks for making me broke,

Hi John,

Maybe you have an opinion about the tick. If you think it's harmless and want me to rescue you from yourself, I'll see if I can help out. I'm currently trying to sell my YT - 8^( - simply because I have too many projects and not enough money or space.

' Sorry it never occurred to me that this car would be in your backyard, or I would have asked you to look at it for me. What do you know of the RR engine?

Cheers,
Allen

I don't know much about RR engines, other than that thier V-8 is a pushrod motor, so this six cylinder might not be OHC.

I arranged to see it in about an hour.

My greatest concern, that I view, is the body work which was done to mount that awful grill. It appears that they've cut the car up considerably.

Yikes! If that's the case, that would eliminate me.

The RR grill conversion is not reversible. The hood and the front valance were cut considerably to allow this. The silver paint appears to be original, with the blue added later to hide the body work. The rear fender arches are about an inch thick. The work done to include the grill, while largely sheet metal, does include globs of bondo (cracked in places).

Overall impression: Very nice, interesting car for $5k. I wish I had it. You would have to enjoy the Rolls Royce conversion as-is. The car has that "look" and nobody would doubt its a roller unless they knew better... and few do.

The engine tick is obvious but adjusting the valves on this car involves using shims, so I understand the avoidance of complications. him and his brother own the car, his brother needs cash, and thats that it has to be sold.

I think $4k would get it without question, $3500 he'd think about pretty hard.

Woodwork is unmolested, but needs a refinish (thats better than someone else having half refinished it) Lots of familiar looking BMC parts under the hood. Power brakes, A-H 3000 discs in the front, automatic. The leather is in fine shape. ?Headliner is only slightly billowy

But there is rust, there was rust, and there is bondo. This is a 20 (to 25) foot car.

Thanks for all the info, John. Even at $3500, that much money would advance the cause of my Mk IV considerably, and when finished I'd have an original car (at least as original as I choose to make it), with no rust and all those extremely simple mechanical features that I've come to know and love.

Sounds like the bondo on this car is going for about 39¢ a pound!

Holiday Cheers!
