MG MG Farina Magnette - MG Farina owner

Hello everyone,
I am the proud owner of a MK IV, car 48KM. The car has 49K miles, and runs great.

It has a bit of rust I'll have to get to eventually, but the interior is in good shape. The only thing I'd like to find is a wheel. The one it has is starting to delaminate.

Where is a good place to find parts for these unique MG's?

Thanks!

Hey Steve,

Welcome! Is this the Tennessee car that belonged to Tom Whitfield? You have a VERY rare car. Here in North America I believe there are just three or four. There are more Mk IIIs and they look just like Mk IVs, but I think the Mk IV is a better car. It has the 1622 engine instead of the 1500; it has a longer wheelbase and a wider track, plus anti roll bars front in back.

There are a couple of names you should know. One is John Elwood. John lives in new Hampshire and his e-mail address is: mgmagnette@aol.com.
John runs a splendid website for Farina Magnettes. Check it out at http://www.mgmagnette.com/ On this page in the third column, look for "Information" and under that, select "Car Histories". This opens "Magnette Storybook" Scroll down to "Mk. IV Magnette" and select "Owner: Allen Bachelder" and you'll see the great page John did for me, based on a little story I wrote about acquiring the car. It's a basketcase but someday...

Many of the mechanical parts of the car are interchangeable with MGA or Austin Healey. For Parts unique to your car, there is one supplier in the world who seriously caters to the Farina Magnettes and their bretheren: NTG Motor Services in Ipswich. Their website is http://www.ntgservices.co.uk/ but there's not much at their website at the moment as they're in the process of setting up a webshopping site. If you look at their Ebay store, http://stores.ebay.co.uk/NTG-Motor-Services-Limited, you'll get the idea. Although currently unavailable, they have a very complete catalog of Farina Magnette parts.

Two clubs I should suggest. One is CO-OC or "Cambridge-Oxford Owners Club in the UK. Their website is http://www.co-oc.org/
CO-OC recently nnexed another club: the MG Magnette and Riley Farina Owners Club which was chaired by Mick Holehouse. Mick's e-mail address is mick_holehouse@lineone.net. Mick is a very supportive guy, very knowledgeable, and he owns and sells a LOT of parts. He is still the Magnette and Riley Farina Registrar for CO-OC.

If you're unnaccustomed to dealing directly with UK suppliers and clubs, you've just entered a new era. I've bought numerous new and used parts from England and have discovered that it's just about as easy as dealing with North American suppliers. Often faster!

Finally, I'm working with the North American MGA Register as they are enthusiastically extending their outreach to Magnette owners. Among NAMGAR members owning a Farina Magnette are Wayne and Dee Johnson of San Diego. Wayne and Dee show up all over the country in their Mk III. They are also restoring a ZB Magnette and they have a Y-series saloon as well. Their e-mail address is <Deemg4@aol.com>.

Under any circumstances, you'll find sparse company among us Farina enthusiasts in North America. There are very few cars and VERY few of us who appreciate them. Back about 4-5 years ago I tried to establish an e-mail list-serve for North American Farina car owners. After two months of following up on every possible lead, I finally came up with 14 members, a number of whom were outside North America. That format ("Farinafins") has been replaced by this one, although I think it still exists out there somewhere. As administrator, I haven't seen a single hit on it in over a year. The point of all this being that there aren't many of us - all the more reason to stick together.

' Hope you enjoy your car and that we can be of some service to you.

Best regards,
Allen

Thanks for the welcome Alan. Yes, this is the car that Tom owned. He did a great job tuning it up. He described it very well. I can't believe how quiet the car is, and how it's so smooth at an idle.

Thanks for the links. I'm familar with John's website but didn't realize it was on this side of the pond.

Hopefully I won't need too many parts. It's pretty complete, and very little rust. Eventually I'd like to replace the steering wheel. After 40 years it's starting to delaminate (?) and I know the Texas summers only make matters worse.

Thanks!

And thanks for your reply. Mick Holehouse could be a very good source for that steering wheel! If you write to him, please give him my greetings.
He has a brother with a family living in the DC area and Mick is known to come over for visits periodically. You might even catch him on one and save some shipping costs!

Cheers,
Allen

Steve,
glad to hear how happy you are with the Magnette.
I have finally found some more picture of the car, please email me your mailing address again and I will send them to you.

It will take me awhile to become accustomed to the format when one is signed in, but isn't it worth it to see that we now have to be signed in to post? Hopefully, these are the last of the extremely annoying spam posts that have struck the Farina threads from time to time. I'd much rather hear more from you, Steve, about how you're enjoying your Mk IV. You have my envy as my Mk IV is several years from venturing beyond the garage.

Allen,
We're really enjoying the car. I was able to find some original MG/Austin seatbelts and had them re-webbed for the backseats. Now I can take my wife and girls out for drives. It's such a unique car so we always get looks and questions. Next month I'm taking it to a GoF about 4 hours south. I put new tires on the rims, and am having the rear-end built this week. I dont' anticipate any problems.

Steven,

So glad you're enjoying the car. I'm really envious - can hardly wait to get started on my Mk IV project. What rear end ratio are you putting in the car?

Cheers,
Allen

I was fortunate that Tom installed a 3.9. The speedo is a little off, but highway speeds are no problem. A couple of months ago I hit the car with a buffer and polisher and the car really shines now.
