MG MG Farina Magnette - New Farina owner

Dear All,

I have been a MGB owner for some years and am now the proud owner of a Farina Magnette. The car is an automatic 1966 on a D registration. The car is pretty much as standard except that it has an alternator and has been repainted beige/black from the original mouse grey. The car is currently in England but will be going to Berlin in the near future. I thought that the automatic box would be unpleasant but it seems to suit the car quite well.

I have a few questions which I haven't been able to answer by looking at the Magnette archives. Are there any Farina archives or is the whole Farina BBS on line?

The clock doesn't work! I assume that the car was originally positive earth and was converted when the alternator was fitted. Is there a problem with the clock when a car is converted from positive earth or is the clock more likely to simply be tired?

Hi Mike

Congratulations on buying a very nice car - very undervalued over here in the UK and there really is not many around. I have a ZA and a Mk4 - both manual - but know the automatics are very nice.

This Farina part of the bbs has not been going long and does not seem to generate the interest of other owners a lot - everyone seems to have joined www.farinaforum.org - hence there is not a lot - if anything - in the Farina archives.

Fire away with your questions and maybe some others will join in - finger crossed.

Re the clock - these are usually 'non runers' but I dont think they are polarity sensitive.

DONT do what many do and spray wd40 in the mechanism - it will clog it up - try some spray on electrical contact cleaner as its normally just bad contacts on the 'cats whisker' in the mechanism - you will need to take it out to get it stripped enough to spray etc.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks, Gobby, the Farina Forum is a great tip! I have already had a load of help from there. I recommend it to anyone with a Farina Magnette.

I took the clock out to have a look and it appears to have got wet at some stage. I have not opened the case yet but at least it is correct twice a day!

Best wishes,

Mike
