MG MG Farina Magnette - Uneven idle solved
| Recently my 1967 Riley 4/72 (105000 mls) developed an uneven idle which progressively became more uneven. The engine was smooth when @ normal operating temperature & above idling speed. I eventually found that on the rear HD4 carb, the screws holding the adaptor plate with the vacuum outlet pipe were not tight & the gasket between the plate & carb body was hard, brittle & broken. I tightened the screws & sealed the joint with gasket sealing paste. The caps & dampers on both carbs should be AUC 8114 & the plunger @ the base of the rod should have a length of 9mm. The gland washer on the slow running adjustment valve screw on front & rear carbs had disintegrated. I fitted new rubber O rings. After this the idle became much smoother & was better when the mixture on both carbs had been richened slightly. I believe that the uneven idle was caused by air leaks through the damaged items as above. I would recommend that these items should be checked. |

Good advice Dave - My Mk3 Magnette runs like a pig despite fitting new jets - I will check the adaptor plates. Cheers Gobby |
